Installing Eudora 7.1, backing it up, restoring it, and using with yahoo
These are notes to remind myself how to deal with this clumsy but useful (nevertheless!) software. Eudora is VERY unfriendly (but I keep it because of mailboxes are discrete units which I can read like text files if I ever need to – not that I know of any such need so far).
Installing a fresh version of Eudora
Either get it from here http://www.eudora.com/download/
or from: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Eudora_Releases
Backing up Eudora data files
While the software gets installed in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Eudora7
it stores the actual data in: C:\Documents and Settings\personal\Application Data\Thunderbird
So backup the Thunderbird data periodically. Software can always be re-installed.
How to restore Eudora when a fresh hard disk is installed
Copy the Thunderbird file back to: C:\Documents and Settings\personal\Application Data\Thunderbird
(each time a new hard disk is installed, and you install eudora afresh, it will automatically create a thunderbird directory but that will have limited data. Just overwrite it with the backup and things will get back to normal again)

Make sure you LEAVE MESSAGES ON SERVER!!!!
Also, you can't download email without first switching off the safety features. You can temporarily disable, then download, then switch off.
Managing Eudora 7.1 with multiple users
How does one make Eudora work with 'limited users' on Windows XP?
Problem: Error message "Could not rename file …descmap.tmp to …eudora\descmap.pce" – but you could get a zillion types of strange messages if sharing is not done properly.
Solution that seems to be working for me:
1. Log on as Administrator.
2. Drop the entire Eudora folder into C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Shared Documents
3. I don't know how I got it done, but the first step is to ensure that the Sharing and Securing option (right click on a folder) lead to an option to share or not share the folder. That is not a natural phenomenon. Something has to be done to make it work.
4. After that, ensure that all permissions are given (if necessary, create a 'new share' with full permissions). Then go to security and ensure that everyone (including users) have full permissions to read and write. Do that to all directories and subdirectories. A very painful task but it works.
5. Delete eudora.log. If necessary delete descmap.pce (including in all sub-folders) and Linkhistory.dat etc.
6. DO NOT START EUDORA FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT! ONLY FROM THE USER ACCOUNT.

Managing FTI and its blogs
FTI mailservers
Incoming Mail Server: mail.freedomteam.in
Incoming Mail Server: (SSL) server39.01domain.net
Outgoing Mail Server: mail.freedomteam.in (server requires authentication) port 26
Outgoing Mail Server: (SSL) server39.01domain.net (server requires authentication) port 465
Supported Incoming Mail Protocols: POP3, POP3S (SSL/TLS), IMAP, IMAPS (SSL/TLS)
Supported Outgoing Mail Protocols: SMTP, SMTPS (SSL/TLS)
Editing FTI (PHP files)
Don’t use any specific IDE to modify php pages. In the cpanel -> File manager there are 2 editors:
1. code editor
2. basic text ditor
You can use either of them to edit the text in the page. All the php pages have very tiny php code and rest is all plain html.
Text 9 – green headings
Backing up FTI
1. Install putty from http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/
2. Enter host (ideally
3. Click ssh as protocol and hit Open. Enter password in shell window.
4. cd public_html
5. run ./backup
6. It produces a file called fti.tgz which is basically tar gzip of FTI’s directory.
7. FTP the file; save in backoffice.
ALTERNATIVE: Backup can be taken from cpanel->File Manager. Just click on public_html folder on LHS navigation and it will list all the folder contents on RHS panel. Check relevant domain and click on ‘compress” button on the top.
Adding news
To create/edit news you need to log on to the CPANEL of our website and click on PhpMyAdmin (under databases) section. Inside PhpMyAdmin aelect database “site” and choose table “news”. There are options and menu links availble on that page to insert and browse data. It is a pretty simple table and by looking at 2 existing records you will understand it better.
changing titles (slugs)
There is a page title and page slug. Page slug is the one that actually forms actual hyper link.

Windows XP problems
1. Start menu not in alphabetical order
A solution is offered at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/177482
(this solution barely works, though)
2. Windows explorer searches are too slow
The best way to resolve: do this immediately as the system becomes slow. Use Windows restore. Go to programs – accessories – system tools – system restore and pick a point about 2-3 weeks prior. That should generally work.
3. Windows explorer thumbnails are too small
http://www.winxptutor.com/thumbnails.htm
a) Download and install Tweak UI from here
- Install Tweak UI and run it.
- Double-click Explorer menu in the left, and choose Thumbnails
- In the right-pane, alter the Thumbnail Size – Default value being 96
- You can also change the quality of the thumbnails using the slider at the top
The Thumbnail size and quality metrics are stored in the following registry values:
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer]
ThumbnailSize (REG_DWORD)
ThumbnailQuality (REG_DWORD)
