Sanjeev Sabhlok's notes on technology, hardware, gardening

Using shell

Note: The default shell is Bourne.

a) Insert these aliases in the .bshrc file

#aliases

alias cdp='cd ~/public_html'

alias d='ls -alFx |more'

alias dir='ls -al -R >dir'

alias f='finger'

b) Scripts – general points [this is useful]

A UNIX script file is similar to a DOS BAT file, except that UNIX scripts must be executable. Note that all lines starting with # are treated as comments, e.g.

#this is a comment.

My scripts are stored in ~sabhlok-scripts

To execute go to the above directory then type the name of the executable script, e.g.

./capture_vmstat.sh

c) Use Pico to write scripts

Basic guide to PICO.
